🌀 Loop Life: Inspired by Interruptions

It was a relaxed, sunny afternoon. I tapped out a rhythm on the body of my guitar - a light percussion to start - then added a simple melody. Nothing grand, just a loop unfolding.

A few layers in, Lily (dog, frequent collaborator) brushed past me. She wanted to go outside and I was blocking the patio door.

So, mid-session, I leaned back, opened the door, and then returned to playing. At first, I thought the recording was useless - that the take was lost to the interruption. But something shifted. Because I’d stopped trying to "get it right", I started playing more freely. More boldly. I took risks with the melody. Explored more. And to me, it’s the best part of the recording - the section that came after I stopped caring.

I even think I was trying to get Lily’s attention with the high notes. She glances back at one point - I didn’t notice it until watching the playback.

The video ends with her wanting to come back inside. It’s not polished. It’s not perfect. But it’s one of my favorite loops I’ve made.

Sometimes inspiration doesn’t show up on cue. Sometimes it brushes past you on the way to the patio.
