Behave yourself?
I have been trying to stay methodical, organised, rational, sensible et cetera.. I definitely think there is a time and place for this kind of behaviour. That said, it might not always be the right choice. I was reminded of this recently.
For many years I’ve had an idea of what I would like a music app to do. It started off as a simple enough idea. I even thought I would be able to do it with Python on Windows. lol. A touch naive. The sole reason Python was my choice was because it was the only language I knew that came close to relevant. C++? Real programming? Such ideas intimidated me and surely were beyond my reach.
Where we're going we don't need roads
Fast forward to now. As I tinkered away on Muser Evolve recently, I was taken by an urge to momentarily eschew clean logical methodical code. Just for fun, why not throw some nonsense together and go off on a video looper coding tangent, an idea I've had for years, using the so-far stable platform of Muser Evolve as a basis?
If you find cause to momentarily take shortcuts, you may find a similar situation to the following befalls you too.
What I learned
Working incrementally neatly and in a tidy fashion will give you a little hits of dopamine as you
make your steady progress. However, if you decide to enter into some mad dash you may cover a lot more ground which, albeit unstable, can give you a taste of what is to come and infuse you with excitement and an intoxicating feeling of new possibilities. This can be not only inspiring, but help answer questions as to whether ideas are good or are there better ones to be had.
Of course you still need to clean up your mess. As such I would say the net effect on time may roughly the same. So why bother? I think there’s is value in just going for it and getting lost in exploring your creativity. So sure, you could keep to a walking pace, or don't walk and instead make a run for it. You might find a better destination for the more methodical, best-practice version of yourself to shoot for later.
